39. “Dead Simple” Voltage Bus Ground Isolator
Some problems beg for a simple solution if you are willing to break away from standard thinking. In this case, the problem was developing a high efficiency 1:1 spacecraft bus isolator to separate the power bus from instrument grounds that were not isolated. The design in this case needed to be done simply and be very tolerant to radiation. The design uses only magnetic devices and transistors with no microcircuits. The total design used 30 parts as was greater than 90% efficient delivering up to 100 watts.
